Practice a simple ritual in which you pause just before eating anything. Ask yourself a simple question: “Am I eating because my body is hungry for fuel, or am I just entertaining my brain with something that tastes good?” Your answer to this seemingly innocent question will reveal much about you and your relationship with food. It will help you greatly on the path to losing weight.
In order to be able to tell the difference, you must quiet the mind and get in tune with your body. Try focusing on your breathing for 15 seconds, then gradually shift your awareness and locate exactly where the hunger pangs are coming from. If you do not feel that they are coming directly from your mid-section, (most notably by a lack of stomach growling), then the urges are probably coming from area an area a bit higher up.
Quickly label these pangs as simple mental boredom. Do something else besides eating. If the urge is not in your stomach, why shove items in there? It will only make your body build up fat. Do Not Eat! Big fat red flags should be popping up right about now. Resist with everything you have. Call a friend, work a puzzle, go for a walk, or surf online – anything to distract that part of your mind that you have spoiled for so long. Just do not feed the stomach. Conquer this mental habit just once and it gets easier each time. It’s exactly like a muscle: “Use it or lose it.” Or in this case, “Use it or you won’t lose it,” (referring to your weight).
